Cocaine is a powerfully addictive and dangerous drug that is snorted, sniffed, injected, or smoked. Cocaine is not a new drug; in fact, it is one of the oldest known drugs. The pure chemical, cocaine hydrochloride, has been an abused substance for more than 100 years, and coca leaves, the source of cocaine, have been ingested for thousands of years.
Crack is also known as cocaine that has been processed from cocaine hydrochloride to a free base for smoking.
Cocaine is a powerfully addictive stimulant that directly affects the brain; it usually makes the user feel euphoric and energetic. Common health effects include heart attacks, respiratory failure, strokes, and seizures. Large amounts can cause bizarre and violent behavior. In rare cases, sudden death can occur on the first use of cocaine or unexpectedly thereafter.
Cocaine is the second most popular recreational drug in the US and Europe after marijuana. In 2006, 6 million Americans age 12 and older had abused cocaine in any form and 1.5 million had abused crack at least once in the year prior to being surveyed.
Cocaine's effects appear almost immediately after a single dose, and disappear within a few minutes or hours. The duration of cocaine's immediate euphoric effects depends upon the route of administration. The intensity of the 'high' is proportionate to the rate of absorption. The quicker the absorption, the briefer the period of action. Snorting takes time to give a high, and the high may last 15 to 30 minutes. The high from smoking may last 5 to 10 minutes only.By Pauline Go
