In these tough economic times, the thought of having and running a home based business may be very appealing to many people. While this type of business can be quite successful and provide some excellent rewards, there are some serious challenges to consider before jumping right in. It's not to say that one shouldn't embark on this journey if they feel truly passionate about it, but it's worth considering certain things.
You will not get a regular paycheck, particularly at first. Running a home based business takes awhile before you really start to see some profit. So if you are looking to get your business up and running quickly and hope to be relying on this as a viable source of income, be very careful of this premise. It's also rather important to consider that there may be many more people out there trying to do the very same thing as you.
If you are running a business focused on gift baskets for example, with the economic times being what they are, there is likely far more competition out there. What would have been limited local or online competition has grown exponentially with continued layoffs and people trying to find a "Plan B" for their family finances.
It's also quite important to realize that running a home based business is not often a 9-5 type of job. This will require some serious time input on your part, especially at the beginning. If you are looking to make this work but only within the few hours a day that you can truly dedicate to it, then really think it through. To be successful with this type of business, you often have to dedicate a good chunk of time and miss out on other life events in the process.
