After enduring the discomfort of hard pellet stools, and after trying a variety of laxatives to no effect, the next step many take is the use of enemas and colon hydrotherapy. These methods introduce a fluid into the lower bowel in order to facilitate evacuation of stool.
In order to conserve water in the body, the colon's primary function is to reabsorb water. One of the primary causes of common chronic constipation is insufficient hydration as well as insufficient consumption of fiber. Insufficient fluids in the diet, shift the balance of water away from the colon. Both soluble and insoluble dietary fiber, shift water back into the colon.
Both enemas and colon hydrotherapy shift water into the colon. They act on different parts of the colon.
Enemas Quickly Relieve Hard, Dry Stools
Enemas are over-the-counter treatments readily available at local pharmacies. Also sold are do it yourself kits so you can create your own enema solution yourself.
One of the easiest to use, found at your local drugstore, comes with an easy squeeze bottle with a comfortable tip. Just follow the instructions, and in 1 to 5 minutes, a bowel movement should happen.
Commercial preparations use saline solutions with or without mineral oil. The saline solutions draw water into the colon. The mineral solutions have the added benefit of inhibiting the movement of water out of feces. They do this because the mineral oil coats bowel contents.
Other kits for at home use require a more complicated set-up. A bag for the solution, tubes, nozzles, as well as I.V. stand are required to make it work. The benefit of the extra effort is a choice of solutions.
Colon Hydrotherapy: Total Colon Health Brings Overall Health to the Body
Colon hydrotherapy, also known as, colonic irrigation, or high colonic is an advance on the idea of an enema. The purpose of a colonic is bowel cleansing, not just as a treatment for constipation. Warm distilled water is gently infused throughout the entire colon. This softens and loosens the stool. Also, the infusion of water promotes peristalsis (colon muscle contractions) to get rid of waste.
A specially trained therapist is required to assist this process. A session lasts for about 45 minutes. The procedure is performed under hygienic conditions. There are no foul odors.
While there are downsides to any method to relieve constipation and hard, dry, pellet stools, these methods are not for everybody. Do read carefully the label of any preparation and the literature about the method. Confer with your physician.Tia Dean
