What is Excessive Underarm Sweating?
Underarm excess sweating, also known as axillary hyperhidrosis, is a medical condition where there is dripping of sweat on the armpits along with a constant odor. Even the strongest of deodorants won't usually take care of the odor. Excessive underarm sweating may be all by itself or may come with another type of hyperhidrosis, which may include excessive sweating in other parts of the body as well.
Of all the types of hyperhidrosis, excessive underarm sweating is the most troublesome because of the constant odor and wetness of clothing, particularly in the work place or some other social function. This can be very embarrassing to say the very least. Although most of us have some sort of underarm sweating when we're doing strenuous physical activities, people with axillary hyperhidrosis suffer from this problem at any given time, although anxiety and stress will increase its intensity.
How to Stop Excessive Underarm Sweating
If you're concerned that your excessive armpit sweating is wrecking your social life or could jeopardize other areas of your life, you may want to see your doctor to rule out any other underlying problem which may be causing the excessive underarm sweating. Depending on the type of excessive sweating you are experiencing, it may be a symptom of something more. However, in the meantime, there are steps you can take in your daily life to help keep this problem in check.
• Drink plenty of water, which will help your sweat glands to work less
• Eliminate or decrease your caffeine consumption as caffeine makes your body sweat more
• Avoid stress and anxiety - you may wish to consider relaxation exercises such as meditation or yoga
• Consider taking herbs such as St. John's Wort, lemon balm, chamomile or catnip
• Include many fruits and vegetables in your diet
• Avoid alcohol and smoking as they both stimulate your body into sweating more
• Practice good hygiene and regular shaving of the underarm area
• Avoid sudden changes of temperatures, which often brings on sudden armpit sweating
