Michelangelo's The Four Captives

The Accademia di Belle Arti Firenze, also known as Academy of Beautiful Art of Florence, was historically known as 'a school of art.' Students have studied art at this academy since the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Pietro Leopold, collected numerous schools under one roof in 1784. The roots of the academy date back further to the Academy of Art Design, founded in 1561. Yet, for the holidaymaker and other visitors, it's the numerous art galleries that attract attention. There's extensive works of art, with paintings ranging from the years 1200s through the 1500s.

Not the least of these are 24 panels by Taddeo Gaddi that exhibit scenes from the life of Jesus. The Gallery houses works by Uccello, Ghirlandaio, del Sarto and Botticelli as well. Spectacular paintings by Lo Scheggia, continues to attract a wide audience as well as providing fine art students with old masters to emulate. His work named Cassone Adimari that he painted in the 1440s has the admiration of many.

Nonetheless, unquestionably the works on exhibit that attract the largest groups of holidaymakers is Michelangelo's - David and a collection of sculptures qnd busts, and in particular. At the far end of the gallery's left wing is a 19th century exhibit and one wall that is decorated with plaster casts, historic busts, and sculptures. The gallery provides fine art students with numerous archetypes to emulate, and the gallery is of interest to art lovers who might only look, but cannot create. The best part here is the unique 'plaster' of the work; Rape of the Sabine Women done by Giambologna. The original finished marble piece is in the Loggia dei Lanzi.

Further along the main hallway guests will encounter quite a few still unfinished art works created by the great master, Michelangelo and his 'The Four Captives' (or Slaves) that is unfinished. Art scholars have debated whether they're unfinished or intentionally left, with only certain features defined. However, admirers of the art of sculpture will just gaze in awe at what even a partial work, those genius fingers could fashion. This provides a glimpse into the working techniques of one of the greatest artists in history.

At the far end of the hallway on a custom-built stage, it was called the tribune: 'Thee David.' finished in 1504, it was completed by an artist less than thirty years old. The sculpture by Michelangelo found had made the most celebrated piece of three diminutional art in the world from a 16-foot piece of discarded stone. In recent history, "Thee David" survived an attacked in 1991, by a disturbed person with a hammer. David's toes became harmed and now the statue resideds behind a Plexiglas barrier. Nonetheless, guests to the gallery can still view the monument. One can almost feel the warmth from a living being as the David stands in a relaxed but alert pose, ready for battle.

There is always a crowd in front of the Plexiglas barrier so be prepared to jostle your way through the throng. Even though Davis originally resided at the Piazza del Signoria in 1873 for four hundred years in the sun and air, it is still the undisputed pinnacle of art in a city filled with outstanding works of art. They have placed a copy of David at the Piazza del Signoria where once the original was.

Lunar One

Bill Larantz stepped out of a door accompanied by three, armed security officers. They turned left down the long corridor, walking methodically slow. He noticed the dark blue stretch uniforms they were wearing, which had a bright-yellow triangular shaped stripe across the front, centered by a large chrome star - the symbol for the World Federation.

"What's it like to work as a security officer?" He asked cheerfully, hoping to somehow break the solemn atmosphere of his companions. But it was to no avail as they didn't respond nor even acknowledge that he had spoken. As they marched along Bill surveyed the faces of the officers and found that they looked straight ahead intently but saw nothing. It was as if they were locked inside their heads.

The corridor was oval shaped and dimly lit with neon lighting that streamed along each side behind glass covers. The walls were faced with a gloomy blue-gray material, which was disturbing to look at.

They quickly approached a large four section portal at the end of the corridor, next to which was located an elaborate keypad. The lead officer deftly typed a code in order to gain access to the entrance. The large door opened up by the two top sections separating and moving up while the bottom sections separated and moved down respectively. Passing through the opening they entered a spacious white colored chamber at the center of which was an enormous console. Surrounding the control panel was a bright florescent-green field, which extended up from the floor about eight feet.

They continued on heading for the green field. The doorway behind them closed with a surprising boom giving him a bit of a start. He could feel his heart flutter for a moment and then it quickly recovered when he realized what it was. Upon entering the field a large three-dimensional head appeared before them sporting a very menacing look. The group took a few steps closer and then stopped abruptly.

"Bill Larantz please step forward," a loud voice blasted from some unseen speaker system. Bill complied a little weak in the knees.

"I am Holax Maddan, Chief Arbiter West-zone district, World Federation," the voice continued fatefully. "Case WF-SH-448xx7 Sentence hearing commencement 4:45:00pm-07/24/2110," Holax said, as if it were an aside, sending the communication to some other unknown audience.

Attention was quickly directed back to him however as Holax said, "You have been convicted of the following crimes: Three counts attempted overthrow of the World Federation, Two counts conspiracy against mankind and Two hundred counts murder of Federation personnel."

There was an abrupt momentary pause as the large head glared at him grimly, then it continued with, "Because of the violent and terroristic nature of your crimes, you have been categorized as a Level Six Convict - maximum danger and destructiveness to society. Therefore, this court hereby sentences you to life imprisonment at the maximum-security Lunar-One criminal institution. You will be leaving at 8:30am-07/25/2110. All of your personal records are - as we speak - being deleted from all databases. You are no longer Bill Larantz, that identity has been permanently erased just as if you had never been born. You are now the property of the World Federation. Your identity is now L-1/INM-448xx7. As the property of the WF you can and may be subjected to any psychiatric-experimentation, including drugs, shock and surgery. Do you have anything to say for yourself before your sentence begins?" Holax asked in conclusion with a most invalidating tone and expression.

"I am neither a criminal nor a terrorist!" Bill began his challenging retort looking squarely in the eyes of the giant head facsimile before him. "Me and my fellow Freedom Fighters are attempting to restore liberty to this planet that the World Fe---," he attempted to say but the hologram image vehemently cut him off midstream with:

"We don't want to hear any of your old-world democratic ideas here. Personal liberty was a failure, as everyone knows, for it is just too dangerous. The American Republic is out and the One World Order is in. You have failed to keep up with the times and just like all the rest of your freedom-advocate brethren, your true purpose - while beating the drum for liberty - is to commit crimes and protect criminals," Holax stated with finality and evaluation.

As Bill considered the ridiculousness of the statement he had just heard and the comical seriousness with which it was uttered, he suddenly broke out into uncontrolled laughter.

The head's features became enraged as it bellowed to the security officers, "Restrain this criminal at once!"

The three officers complied in a hectic manner, by pulling out their electrified nightsticks, turning them on and touching them to Bill's midsection in unison, sending him into immediate violent convulsions for a few short seconds, after which he collapsed unconscious to the floor.

John Smith was not his real name, it was actually Nolan Pool, but that name was just too unique. You see Nolan had the fortune or misfortune - however the case may be - of having been born with the most average features. He had the mean height of five feet eleven inches. His brown hair and brown eyes were very common. To accentuate this he wore run-of-the-mill clothes and shoes, had an average-Joe hair cut and maintained a work-a-day manner in all of his actions.

Now most people who were quite average in looks would have probably considered this to be a real problem and might have tried to make themselves a bit out of the ordinary in some way, by getting an odd haircut, donning strange clothes, or something. But not Nolan; instead he thought of it as an asset, an advantage to be utilized to the fullest. All the while he was growing up he practiced being ordinary. He specifically watched films and movies to spot the people who didn't stand out, which were usually in the background and were quite often missed by everyone else. He would then mimic their every move, practicing and drilling constantly, getting their actions down cold. He would then seek out new films and movies for more every-day characters and then mimic them and so on...

He was now fifty-seven and having made this average behavior a habit for many years now, had become a true master of the common man, his every move a letter-perfect regularity. So good in fact that he was now able to virtually disappear. He could get multitudes of people to become unaware of him. Everyone he met and even those he saw on a regular basis had a very hard time remembering his name. Some would try hard for a while to pay attention to him and keep track of him, but after only a short time they would begin to lose him, eventually he became just part of the background. All communication to him would start being on an automatic basis. And he went about his business making very certain that he kept all of his actions mundane.

Nolan had done very average in High School and College, though he could have done much better, but that would have gone against his every-day guy persona. After finishing school he became a reporter for a newspaper in Pittsburgh. He was not an exceptionally great journalist, but could get into places and get stories that others could not, because of his invisible man ability. He worked at the paper for the better part of ten years and gradually befriended a beautiful woman columnist named Stasha. They worked together closely for years as good friends and eventually fell in love with each other, ultimately marrying. Yes he could remember those times vividly. That was back in the old days when the United States was still intact, before The One World Order had taken over. They had a really great relationship as she was the one to stand out and he was just the opposite. And because he was so average he took nothing away from her. Nobody ever really noticed them as a couple, but rather her as a star journalist and beautiful woman. So that worked out great because he didn't want distinction at all and she lived on it.

Each year their love grew stronger and stronger and understanding between them was inviolable. They became such a great team together that they felt nothing could get in their way and could therefore accomplish anything. And so it was they endeavored together with the intention of changing the world for the better. But sometimes it seems that perfect situations such as theirs are not meant for a world as imperfect as this, and - just when it seemed that things could not possibly get any better - the wonderful individual that he cherished so dearly, was murdered, ending forever their life and love together.

She had been working on a story and was uncovering evidence of a secret state government conspiracy, proving that revenue allotted for education, was being used instead to drug children between the ages of six to twelve. The "medications" being administered - though legal - would in effect render all of these young people mentally disabled, thus permanently nullifying their chances of getting any kind of education. And so when she had uncovered and exposed too much, the vested-interest-powers-that-be did her in but good. They did not just kill her but riddled her body with thirty plus rounds from a semi-automatic machine gun.

He was - to say the least - overwhelmed and devastated by his loss for nearly a year. He couldn't think or function. He went through the daily motions of life - eating, dressing, showering and working - kind of on an auto-pilot basis, never really doing any of it at all. He had completely lost his purpose and drive to go on living. But then one day he realized what he must do. He needed to avenge his wife's tragic death by exposing the responsible group as the bloodletting totalitarians that they were. And so his every waking moment was spent ferreting out their dastardly schemes and plots.

He soon discovered that the group he was after was much larger and higher up than he had expected. The true source was a corporate elite that ran the entire planet. The more he penetrated the operations of these people the more hate he developed for them. He realized two years ahead of time that something like the World Federation was on its way. He knew there was nothing he could do to stop it from arriving. But knowing this did not, in any small way, deter his determination to rid the world of this atrocious group.

He of course no longer worked for any newspaper, as they had all been taken over and slanted with WF propaganda. His methods of both finding and distributing the truth about The One-World-Order were simple and insidious. He would get jobs in which he would correct the books of large corporations, thus enabling him to poke around and research, collect evidence, then move on to the next gig and do the same. After a while he would have the information necessary to release an exposé over various private media such as underground computer networks and home broadcasting (television and radio). In addition he would publish articles anonymously in various secret evolutionary and revolutionary magazines, papers etc.

Nolan walked along Canal Street heading for Saxon center - the newest fifty story corporate office building in lower Manhattan. As he went along he noticed the people on foot near him, but they noticed him not at all. Their expressions were all very nervous as they tried to avoid the many security cams above the street. Everywhere you looked there were cameras of various kinds, there were different sizes and shapes, placed in every type of location. They were all perfectly designed to watch your every move. The people were no longer free and the atmosphere was anxious and troublesome.

Upon reaching the front doors of his destination he took care to enter the building in the exact manner he did everyday and was not thrown off by the unexpected, "Hi" from some unknown passerby.

He responded with an average "Hello" and a slight bow of the head then continued on. He made sure that each and every step and motion that he took was an exact duplicate of prior ones he had taken each time before. He stepped into the elevator and monotonously pressed twenty-four, watched the doors close and started on his ascent. It took some time to reach floor twenty-four, what with all the stops made along the way but finally he arrived and the doors opened. He stepped out and turned right to walk up the long corridor towards suite 2469.

Once he had reached the correct office he rang a buzzer located next to the door. Shortly thereafter a voice from an intercom said, "Good morning Mr. Smith, come on in."

The door latch-light went from red to green and then he opened the door and entered. "Hello Mr. Benkins," he said as he closed the door behind him. He noticed that some unknown person stood next to Benkins.

"Ah-Jim right?" Benkins asked, obviously already having trouble with his first name.

"It's John sir," he replied, not in the least disturbed by his forgetting.

"Oh yes John that's right. I would like you to meet Daran Oldemayer, he is the Chief Executive officer of our company," Benkins introduced nervously.

"Pleased to meet you," Nolan said, as he shook the VIP's hand making sure not to be effusive, keeping in his usual everyday manner as well.

"Nice to meet you," The executive said, not meaning it at all as he had an attitude of "I am the most important person you have probably ever met."

"There are the files that I need you to correct today," Benkins said distractedly as he pointed towards two or three Super-Disk-ROM cartridges of one hundred "googol-bit" capacity - one hundred googol bytes of information. And then he continued with, "We were just on our way to our quarterly meeting so I will check back with you later. Alright?"

"Ok Mr. Benkins see you later on," Nolan said quite nonchalantly and noticed that they didn't even stay to hear him finish, as they had already left. The VIP he had greeted was not aware that he had infected his hand with over a million nano-percept recorders. These micro-robots were beyond state-of-the art. They were so far undetectable by any system or device - of course this would be so, for just so long, perhaps two or three months longer and then he would have to improve and miniaturize them yet again. He had infected the Chief executive because he had heard rumors of an ultra-secret convention comprised of the most elite and wealthy individuals on the planet. And he wanted to record this meeting in its entirety as this might just be the breakthrough event that could completely expose the true intentions and nature of the World Federation.

He sat down at the computer, slid in the twelve inch Super-Disk-ROM and began correcting the books as requested but at the same time infected the network with several virus code mechanisms. He also planted a few million hardware and program nano-bots in the main computer so as to redesign and reconstruct the whole system from afar - all undetectable of course. In not too long a time he would have such total control over the company software that he could do whatever he wanted with it and the users would only see what he wanted them to see, nobody ever suspecting anything different.

In just four hours time he had successfully installed the proper corrector modules that would right the entire database while taking care of his own agenda as well. There was not much else he could do at this point but sit back and let everything takes its course.

10:15:00-AM-09/10/2110

Erick Land was a little more than just a bit nervous as he walked about with the personnel director who was currently giving him his orientation. You see this was his very first day on a job he had been striving at for more than fifteen years. Somewhere in the back of his mind he felt as if somehow something would go wrong and all of his hard work would be for naught. This was mixed with intermittent positive feelings and thoughts like "Wow I really made it."

The Personnel director - Harve Migel - started his orientation lecture with, "I am going to give you a complete rundown of the Lunar One control station, a little of it's history and what it is exactly that we do here." Harve stated this importantly and you could tell that he thought that working here was of a very high status. He continued on with, "We abbreviate the prison facility to L-1 and the control station to L-1-Con. Now, L-1 is located at Anderson crater 150 kilometers south of where we are here at Freundich crater, which is the home of L-1-Con. We have to run the prison remotely, as the inmates that are sent there are the most dangerous in the solar system. We control - by way of robots and robotic systems and equipment - the entire L-1 facility. We feed the prisoners, keep watch on them, maintain the grounds and structures, and additionally administrate all new construction and planning all from L-1-Con. The inmates come in by small one-way capsules, which become - upon landing - prison cells. All supplies and equipment are shipped from here via automated mini-rail, so as not to allow for a way of escape. The mini-rail cars are so small that there is no way that any human being - including a small child - could possibly fit aboard it. Additionally there is no way to carry or produce oxygen on the rail cars, making it doubly impossible as an escape route. So you see we have here the most escape proof prison ever constructed, one hundred percent fail-safe in my opinion."

Harve paused for a moment in his speech to take a drink of water from his refrigerated thermos unit. And then he continued with, "Now the history of L-1 and L-1-Con began thirty years ago when construction was initiated. It took the better part of ten years to finish and the first inmate arrived nineteen years ago. Since then more than seven thousand prisoners have been sent here, not one has ever escaped and it is not expected that any ever will. The idea for L-1 was conceived by Helmer Aswit, he was a noted psychiatrist and prison director. The current inmate population is four thousand, one hundred and fifty six. This is due to the fact that since The One World Order has taken over Earth, various prisoner rights have been dropped and the government can now use these prisoners in any experiments they see fit. About forty percent of the prisoners who have died at L-1 were due to psychiatric research tests."

Harve again halted for a time as they made their way around a large wall, on the other side of which, was an enormous computer control center. Erik couldn't believe how many people he saw running all manner of computerized equipment; things so high-tech and advanced that it was beyond belief. The center stretched out in all directions and was about the size of a stadium. As he stood there dumbfounded Harve resumed. "Here is where it all happens. This is where you will be working once you complete your entrance program, but for now let me give you a tour. As you can see there is quite a bit of personnel needed to operate L-1." He stopped and looked at Erik somehow sensing that he wanted to comment.

"Wow! I never imagined that it would be anything like this. It's almost overwhelming," Erik stated with obvious awe.

"Yes it can seem that way when you have not been given any information beforehand. As you know everything that we do here is top-secret and confidential. This is why you signed the pledge stating that you will not disclose anything about what we do, what you see or what you know concerning L-1 and L-1-Con, under penalty of imprisonment," Harve responded in a "this-is-to-be-expected" attitude.

They continued the tour for the balance of his first day. Late that night in his quarters, Erik pondered on the next six days, which was how long his entrance program would take. His mind then went on to the next eighteen months - the length of his first tour at L-1-Con; he hoped that all would go well. He also looked forward to his three-month leave after his first tour, although it was a long way off, it was a good goal to work towards. He felt pretty good about everything now, minus the apprehension and anxiety he had earlier. He thought, "it's all going to work out fine." A few short moments later he was sound asleep.

2:25:00-PM-09/22/2110

It had been nearly two months since Bill had been sentenced back on earth. He had taken off the very next morning on a prison airbus, top-security of course. He rode the bus for fifteen hours to Houston where he was transferred aboard Space-Elevator-One - better known as the thriftiest way into space. This grueling journey was most unpleasant and lasted five - seemingly unending - days. At the end of that time, already some two thousand miles in space, he was transferred to an enormous earth-moon-space-barge where he was placed aboard a small capsule - later to serve as his prison cell upon reaching Lunar-one. Traveling on the barge was not too bad; he actually almost enjoyed himself. But this only lasted for two days at which time the large ship entered the lunar orbit. Once on the far side - with the earth no longer in view - he and the capsule of his imprisonment were ejected from the barge towards Lunar-One at Anderson crater. It took the capsule under three hours to get there. Upon entering the crater, you could see what looked like some lunar settlement city scattered across it. His capsule was not going to land on the surface, but instead sought out one of four large shafts that led deep underground. Once it had made it to the shaft it was heading for, it began to slowly descend going down, down, seemingly to the depths of hell. The capsule stopped descending at about one point five kilometers underground and found an empty pre-constructed concavement, which it entered and then finally came to rest. A short time after that he could see various robotic machines doing a multitude of operations to adapt his capsule to the Lunar-One system complex.

Bill knew that he had a very limited amount of time to save himself. If he wanted to make it out of here alive, he would have to act extremely fast, as he was aware of the fact that all technically trained prisoners, were used in experiments that ended with death - usually within the first six to eight months of imprisonment. This was - he figured - because they were trying to prevent escape. However, he had been planning his breakout well before he had arrived. In fact, he had been planning for it since the inception of the Freedom-fighter movement, over five years ago.

He had smuggled - hidden deep within a cavity in one of his teeth - less than one microgram of nano-replicators. These nano-bots were capable of replicating at the rate of two-ex per minute. He had earlier programmed them to activate upon touching a micro magnet to the cavity in his tooth, which he had hidden in a plastic toothpick. And now, two months later, he had nearly two tons of nanobotic material. He had to be extremely prudent in his programming not to amass too much in any one area, as it would be detected. And so, during production, he carefully dispersed the microscopic material all throughout Lunar-One. He had developed a large array of different kinds of micro-equipment, each and every one of which, was designated a particular task. He had a whole series of computer reprogramming nano-bots. The first thing he did with these was to infiltrate the whole network, including all of the robotic equipment. Then he began to create a system wide simulation of L-1, using the digital footage he had collected from the video recording devices, located throughout the prison.

He wanted to be able to handle every conceivable variation, so that those monitoring L-1 at the base-station would believe that they were seeing actual signals and not simulation. This was especially difficult to do for those robots that traveled throughout L-1 being remotely operated by L-1-Con personnel. He had accomplished this goal three days ago and was at this time, slowly, one by one, switching from video signal to simulation. He had to be very cautious in doing this, because each time he switched a machine over there was a split second in which there was an absence of signal transmission and this caused interference on the receiving end. This sort of thing was not too unusual in ordinary operations, as electronic equipment tended to do that from time to time. But he didn't want to get too carried away on this, because were it to happen too frequently, someone could very easily become suspicious. And so he usually picked equipment that was not in operation temporarily. Sometimes however, he had to pick one that was in operation - due to the time factor - knowing very well that the change in signal would be seen at the base end.

The next step he had planned was to record as many of the Psychiatric experiments as possible from the robotic-testing equipment. He had already captured twelve prefrontal lobotomies, twenty-two electric-shock treatments, over fifty pain-drug-hypnosis sessions and about twenty-five other miscellaneous tests. He figured he needed about double that amount to produce enough variety of simulations. He was also in the process of gaining access to the entire computer network. He desperately needed to do this, so that he could find out whom they would be choosing for each experiment. He felt a great deal of anxiety with regard to this, because his very survival depended upon it and he had about another month of work to go to complete it.

Now because he couldn't have any equipment in his room, he had to infect himself with various nanobotic systems. He had for instance, nano-synapse signalers, which converted nano-signals to nerve-signals that could then be seen in his mind as pictures. He had also, synapse-nano receivers, which would take his thoughts as commands and convert them to nano-signals. And in addition to that, he had a nano-digestive detoxification system, which filtered out all drugs, toxins and poison while he ate. He had discovered that they were already doing some kind of test on him, using nerve drugs and he therefore had to act as if it were affecting him by dramatizing the effects, lest anyone become suspicious. And so he worked intently on, burning the midnight oil in a race against time, to both save his life and escape from this godforsaken man made hell.

3:15:00-PM-12/21/2110

Noland had successfully infected thirty-three people with nano-bots in the last six months. He had selected the most likely candidates he could find that were likely to attend the conference of the elite. As it turned out, only eight of those he had chosen actually had made it, but that was more than enough for his needs.

The great convention was being held near Groom Lake, Nevada, in a location known as area 51 - a top secret government base. It had started nearly an hour ago and all the equipment he had implanted was functioning excellently. As he was constantly in need of modernizing his nano-bots, he had a system in place within each person infected that would construct each advance and then gradually replace the previous technology with the new. So far there had been no sign that any of his micro-equipment had been detected, which was all very good and well, but on the other hand, he still could not be relaxed about it, as each moment that passed brought an increased possibility of it occurring. He only hoped that he could get enough data to expose them enough to bring about their demise.

He noted the many VIP's that were attending: there was the President of the World Federation, the Secretary of Prisons, the Secretary of Health and Mental Stability, four Sector Governors and over one-hundred International Corporate officers from the worlds largest enterprises. Eight of the corporate leaders were infected with nano-technology and they were unwittingly sending him signals just as if they had been spies working for him intentionally. One executive in particular, Daran Oldemayer, CEO of Saxon Software Incorporated, was the central terminal through which all digital information collected was being channeled. Noland thought back to the day he had met this man, the day he had infected him, he had been so smug and self-important, and here he was betraying his fellow power-mongers

Anybody Can Learn How to Do Magic

Did you know that the magic tricks David Blaine, David Copperfield, and Chris Angel do are usually fairly easy to do? Most magic tricks take lots of practice, practice that is well worth the time spent. But there are some magic tricks, that you can do without any practice, and there are even some magic tricks that work themselves!

Well, okay, that information is good to know. But, where do you learn these types of magic tricks? There are many websites on the internet the will actually charge you to show you how to do magic tricks. Well, I am going to tell you, never pay some website for a video on how to do a magic trick. Its okay to pay an online magic shop for a magic trick if they are mailing you something, but 90% of the time, if you are paying for a magic trick and all you get is a downloadable word document. It is probably not going to work.

There is hope. You can search YouTube for magic trick tutorials, but your going to waste your time trying to find the real magic trick tutorials from the fake videos just trying to get views. That's a waste of an entire day searching YouTube when you only learn two or three tricks! What a waste!

Well, there are some websites out there, that actually spent the time you did, looking for the legit magic tutorial videos on video sharing websites like YouTube, Metacafe, and revver. They got the real magic tutorials, and put them onto a website for everybody who is interested in learning to go view. Best of all, they made this website free!!! All you need to do is learn to search for it.

Sweet Seduction - Vampires and Role Playing

The world is pretty much in love with vampires right now. Between Twilight, True Blood, and the glut of vampiric young adult novels out there, it's pretty safe to say that fangs are in at the moment.

One of the great lures of these dark creatures is that people want to be them. To be immortal, sexy, and super strong for an eternity is a pretty attractive proposition. However all of these positive qualities are balanced out by that dark need, a lust that can only be absolved in blood.

When it comes to role playing there are a lot of nerdy games and practices out there. Weird is weird, no matter what crowd your talking about. However, sexy is also sexy, and vampire role playing has a sweet appeal that goes a little bit further than your average dungeons and dragon's game.

Vampires are seductive. The lure of being taken into their dark world is appealing. Unfortunately it's also unreal. However that doesn't have to stop you from dreaming.

That is the true allure of vampire fiction, and the answer as to why it has suddenly swept across the nation. It is also the answer to why vampire interactive, fiction, is so popular right now. The ability to enjoy the creative process, focused through a sexy, strong, immortal creature, shared with others, is a powerful and moving experience.

In the end the idea of "role-playing" can be pretty ridiculous. It is a game of make believe. And yet creative visualization is the ability to imagine yourself as someone else, in order to become them. Maybe we can't become real vampires, but we can come closer to them, through creative visualization, perhaps shared with a group of friends.

Fun Ideas For Stag and Hen Parties

It's one of the most exciting events on the run up to any wedding, and certainly an experience that'll be looked back upon for years. Indeed, a stag or hen party is a quintessential part of wedding planning - so it's worth making it an event to truly cherish and remember - both for the bride and groom to be, as well as all the party participants.

There are, of course, many ways to plan a stag or hen party. But a good place to start is with ideas of what the bride or groom might like. If he or she isn't big on parties, then planning a wild and crazy night out on the town isn't going to give them the type of stag or hen do that they'd enjoy. Get all the party-planners together to brainstorm a list of activities the bride and groom might like, and proceed with your planning from there.

If you want to veer away from the party scene - or if you simply want to include a range of activities during a stag weekend - you might want to consider a golfing getaway. Due to its affordability and availability both in the UK and throughout Europe - such as in Hungary, Latvia, and Poland - golfing is a popular activity for stag parties. Include it as a day activity on a weekend getaway, or make it the focus of a stag weekend. Either way, it's fun and a great way for the lads to bond.

On the other hand, if you're hoping to plan a low-key or classy hen party, why not opt for a spa retreat? Spa getaways are perfect for relaxing, rejuvenating, and pampering the bride-to-be, as well as all her friends. A spa retreats can also be paired with a shopping trip, a yoga or Pilates class, and a stop at the nail salon for a truly memorable ladies' day out. And, as with golfing getaways, spa retreats can be planned as a one-day event or an extended getaway.

Another great activity - both for stag and hen parties - is to go wine tasting. Aside from interesting tours of regional wineries and the opportunity to taste some exceptional wines, wine-tasting can be paired with fine dining - either at the wineries themselves, of at nearby restaurants - for a classy and cultural stag or hen do.

Of course, no stag or hen party is complete without some costumes for the bride or groom-to-be, and the party participants. You might choose a theme for the party and dress up accordingly, or just pick up some fun matching accessories for everyone in the party. Whether you choose to go out on the town or arrange low-key activities such as wine tasting, adding adult costumes to the mix is just one more way to add to the fun.

Learn the Meanings of Flowers

There are meanings ascribed to flowers. Since ancient times, flowers have been used to symbolize feelings and circumstances. Even today, flowers are part of the most meaningful times in our lives, such as birth, death, weddings, holidays and convalescence. Using flowers as symbols began with many ancient religions. They continued to grow in usage and popularity throughout the Renaissance, reaching the highest pinnacle in the Victorian age.

It is not unusual to see different flowers listed as part of the worship of many ancient deities such as Apollo, Cerridwen, Aphrodite and Brigid. Flowers used in several Renaissance paintings are thought to be a symbol of various virtues. Adding emotional meaning really took precedence in the Victorian era. There was a book written in 1819 about the meanings of flowers called "Le Language des Fleurs" by Madame Charlotte de la Tour. One that was written in 1884 is still used today: "Language of Flowers" by Kate Greenaway.

Flower names were given to girls, such as Heather, Daisy and Rose. During Victorian times, the actual flower did not have to be given. A pressed version, a card with the chosen flower printed upon it, or even a handkerchief dotted with the scent of the chosen flower would suffice. Some of the meanings follow in this article. See if they correspond with any of your own experiences when you have received flowers.

Daisy

Daisies are sweet flowers with many petals surrounding a flat center. They are often used by little girls to play "He loves me, He loves me not." They are associated with innocence, purity and simplicity. They also stand for fidelity, loyalty in love, patience and beauty. When given, they could also mean that you wish to share your feelings. Daisies have been used as decoration since ancient Egypt. They are related to lettuce, sunflowers and artichokes.

They suggest childhood innocence and modesty. Young girls used to close their eyes and pick a handful of daisies. They would then count the number of blossoms to know how many years before marriage.

Iris

The iris can be found in fancy varieties and the more delicate wild variety. Iris means faith, hope and valor. It may stand for wisdom or cherished friendship. It could be promise in love, or show the giver's compliments. The leaves of iris are shaped like sword blades, and are meant so show that "her heart has been pierced." This flower is the emblem of both France and the city of Florence, Italy. In China, using the iris in artwork symbolizes the "dancing spirit of early summer." The fluttering petals are reminiscent of butterfly wings.

Rose

Roses are most often associated with love. Each color has a different angle to take.

A red rose stands for passion, romance and perfection. It is the traditional way to say "I love you". Often used in weddings since time immemorial, it has come to stand for fidelity and faithfulness.

A white rose is purity, innocence and honor. White roses are often used as a symbol of remembrance at funerals. One can also have white be the color of true love or secrecy. Used frequently in wedding bouquets, it suggests unity, virtue and the new bond of matrimony. Young love is yet another aspect of this beautiful flower. A white rosebud may symbolize a young girl and may carry the meaning of one who is too young yet for love.

A pink rose is grace, elegance and happiness. They may also stand for appreciation or joy. Pink is also the color of admiration. You could also imply the same, yet gentler meanings as a red rose. It may suggest gratitude, sweetness or poetic romance. Pale pinks can express sympathy.

A yellow rose is infidelity, friendship or joy. Some consider them a sign of warmth or happiness. They may suggest power or jealousy and dying love. They can also symbolize platonic love or express an apology.

An orange rose is enthusiasm and desire. These beautiful flowers may also mean passion, excitement, and the desire for strong romance. They could suggest that a friendship turn into a romance, since orange is a blending of yellow and red. They can be given as a gift to mean "I'm proud of you."

A lavender rose is the symbol of enchantment or love at first sight. It is associated with royalty and romance, so it often suggests splendor and majesty. Perhaps, you could have it also include the meanings of the nonexistent blue rose, and have it mean wonder and magic. Either way, lavender roses are favorites.

Giving a loved onerose jewelry is a gift that lasts years instead of a week or two.

Roma Downey - Painting a Portrait of Peace

- Interviewed by John A. Anderson

Inspired by a quote from the great painter Vincent Van Gogh, "It is no longer enough to be the painter, I want to be the paint, " Roma Downey determined to pursue a life in the arts and drama. With her warmth and charisma, Roma's work has colored the lives of millions of fans throughout the world. During the course of our conversation it was easy to see why - Roma opens her heart and soul and applies it fully in everything that she does.

Through your work, you have been able to pursue and associate yourself with very uplifting and positive ventures - from your highly successful Touched by an Angel television series to your work with Phil Coulter on the serene Healing Angel CD, and even your recent children's book "Love is a Family." Your work promotes hope and peace. I'd like to begin by asking you about the events of September 11. Those events have had such an enormous impact on the world. How have these events affected you personally and what are you doing to remain positive?

I have been able to draw from my experience of being raised in Northern Ireland, where terrorism and war in the streets were a way of life for us, particularly in the 1970's and 1980's when those troubles were at their heights. I have some experience living with this kind of fear and the idea that something can happen from unexpected places and that things can blow up, though the terror was never quite as dramatic or as profound as what happened in New York City and Washington.

I do know that even in the darkest of nights for us as children there was great relief, literally, when the sun would rise - breakfast had to be made and the kids had to be fed, and we would have to get off to school. Somehow the days would move forward, and we moved forward with it because we had to. Somehow we dragged one foot in front of the other and we kept going. To some extent I have been able to apply that experience to our present situation. With the horror from which we are all still recovering, we ask ourselves if we will ever get the images out of our minds; probably not.

Do you still think about those experiences you had as a child in Ireland? How have those images remained with you?

Yes, that's my point. I think having come through the violence of Ireland has allowed me to know and communicate that we can and will keep moving forward. For the first few days after the tragedy we were all in a state of paralysis and absolute shock that this could happen on the American mainland, and the fact that it essentially dropped from the sky created a nightmare beyond anyone's imagination or fears. Like probably everybody else, I couldn't sleep for days afterwards. I'd wake up in anxiety, replaying in my mind these events. The first time I got on a plane after the tragedy I was very nervous. I actually flew into JFK Airport 10 days after those events, and found myself for the first time in my life really quite afraid to fly. I have flow a lot all over the world for many years and never thought twice about it. I am as human as the next person.

On the other hand, I think that if we look at the way this tragedy has united the country - indeed, united the world - in the face of all of this fear and terror, we have tremendous movement forward and progress together towards peace. In Ireland, as a direct response to what has happened in the United States, the I.R.A. has laid down their arms knowing that nowhere in the world will anybody tolerate the idea of terrorism again. I think they realize that theirs is a lost cause. Now Ireland is moving towards a lasting peace, maybe as a direct result of this recent tragedy. Nobody wished that the events of September 11 had happened; yet with the way that everyone has joined together, you can still visibly see the signs of God and goodness in the aftermath of these awful things.

Thank you for your thoughts and willingness to discuss this topic. Incidents of depression have escalated due to these recent events and I believe your experience and perspective will benefit many. I appreciate your work on the Healing Angel CD - it is quite timely and it's message of calm and peace has never been more needed.

Healing Angel was a work of poems, prayers and prose set to lovely Celtic music, geared towards positive thinking and reflection. For me, it was my sleep - my unconscious or subconscious - that was more deeply impacted by these events than anything else. We are so inundated with information; the final phone calls from the towers and final phone calls from the plane. Those last moments and images of the planes hitting the buildings have completely penetrated our psyche.

Collectively as a nation we will continue to have sleepless nights. But there comes a point where we get sensory overload. Obviously I was aware of what's going on, but at a certain point I had to stop reading and stop looking at it. It wasn't that I didn't care any longer; I just needed to redirect and recharge myself. Before I go to bed, I like to listen to soothing sounds and music that lends itself to meditation. I pray before I go to sleep and then I just let the day go. I find that very helpful.

Can you describe your upbringing and how that has had an effect on your healthy perspective today? I read that your mother passed away when you were 10 years old.

What I remember of my early childhood is that I was very loved and supported and encouraged in all ways. So when my mother died it was like the lights were turned out in my life. It was truly devastating. That loss created a void in me, and I know the woman that I became grew up around that emptiness as opposed to facing it and getting over it. I can honestly say that it wasn't until the birth of my daughter, Reilly, five years ago, that I felt the void filled for the first time. My father did the best he could under the circumstances, and I certainly felt no lack of love, but a girl needs a mother.

Is it true that both your father and mother died of heart attacks?

They did. My father died in 1985 when I had just entered college, and I found myself orphaned by the time I hit my second decade. So, yes, both of my parents died of heart attacks. At that time in most of Europe, and especially in Northern Ireland, we weren't educated in the ways of healthy eating. Our diets were very fatty - a lot of fried foods, butter and dairy products - and I think that obviously contributed to their death. Also, neither of them were great exercisers. Couple those with added stress of troubled times in which we were living and you have little hope for positive health.

Are you concerned about genetics?

Absolutely. When I deal with a medical issue, first and foremost is my medical history. If there is a genetic weakness, I have to be extra careful. I am also in the business of 'show' where, unfortunately, there is too much emphasis on image. In this industry there is a superficial balance between wanting to be healthy and needing to look good.

Do you have a fitness routine that you follow?

I enjoy fitness, but it is often a time of regularity. If I had planned to work out today like I planned to meet with you, it wouldn't have happened. I am at the mercy of schedule here. I do have an elliptical crosstrainer machine in my home where I try to work in my cardiovascular workout. That is first and foremost to keep my heart healthy and to increase my metabolism to help burn fat. I am also a member of the Excel Gym, and they have a series of body attack and body pump classes. The body pump classes work every main muscle group with weights. I try to attend at least 2-3 times per week.

If time weren't a factor, what fitness routine would you pursue?

I would try to do something every day, alternating between cardiovascular emphasis one day and a weight workout the next, with a little yoga thrown in to relieve stress. I like to work out - I like how it makes me look and feel. I like how I feel after a workout. I often forget, particularly when I'm tired, that workouts actually give me more energy.

What are some 'traditional' exercises that you do NOT enjoy doing?

I don't enjoy saying no to Häagen-Dazs! But I would rather sacrifice a dessert rather than have to do an extra set of pushups. Really, I enjoy the weight workouts more than the cardiovascular workout. I find that running on a treadmill leaves me a little bored, frankly. Every minute seems like an hour. So that's really hard for me to stay on there to get my 20 minutes done.

I do find that I do much better working out in a group. I find it very hard to motivate myself. I don't have a great deal of discipline when it comes to working out. If I am laying on my own to do fifty sit-ups, that fifty very easily becomes twenty, and I tell myself that I will do more later. But when I'm in a group situation I am way too competitive, and if it kills me, I will do the fifty. I find that I work out better when I go to the club as opposed to doing it on my own. When I make myself get down to the gym and get into the class, then I do great. And of course there are usually loads of girls who are half my age and I tell myself - I am sure they are not going to finish if I am not!

How would you describe your nutritional perspective and habits?

Because I do some weight work - and this is small weights, I'm not suggesting I'm Arnold the bodybuilder here - I am aware that my body needs protein. I try to have a high protein, low-fat diet. I love fish. I don't eat too much dairy and I try to make sure that, particularly in the winter months, that I supplement everything with lots of vitamins. I begin every day with a health smoothie that is protein based with a banana and all the vitamin supplements that I take.

Because of the hours that I am working, my biggest mistake is that I forget to eat. I'm not suggesting that this is the way you should do it. But I just get caught up in the work. I don't have an enormous appetite, and I sometimes need to be reminded to eat. I know that it's better for the body to eat every 2-3 hours to achieve the metabolic at an optimal level. So I will snack on the set - usually eating a mix of cottage cheese and fruit.

Do you have any nutritional 'guilty pleasures?'

My favorite Häagen-Dazs is called Dulce de Leche. It's a caramel swirl in rich ice cream - it's sinfully sweet, but it's a spoonful of heaven! My experience is that if you take a spoonful at the freezer, standing up, then that doesn't count! It's only when you are sitting down with a bowl and a spoon that there are calories. Calories somehow don't count when you stand at the fridge.

For an Angel, it's amazing how down to earth you are.

The hardest thing with trying to get fit or lose weight or trying to stay healthy is simply getting started. Sometimes it's easy to let our time commitments or work schedules get in the way of our fitness goals. I find that if I let my workouts go for a week or two weeks, then it's hard to get back into doing it. But that's the time that you've really got to make yourself go. When you get out of a routine it's too easy to say yes to an extra portion of French fries and tell yourself that you will go tomorrow, or next week, or I'll go in the new year. Don't get into that trap - go now! Do it.

What is your relationship with the Safe Kid's Coalition and how did this come about?

I am their national spokesperson. They approached me and asked if I would do it. I have found that if I had taken on everything that came my way I would have no time to do my day job. I decided early on that I would select things that only had to do with children or Ireland. I have also done a lot of work with Make a Wish, and Project Children. I do a lot of work with Primary Children's Hospital which I find time for on any occasion I can get.

Out of all the things that come your way, why did you choose Safe Kid's Coalition?

Because I think it is so worthy. We've got to take care of our kids, and if my celebrity can be used to draw attention to any of these issues, then in my opinion it is celebrity well used.

I understand that art has been a longtime passion of yours. Is that something you still pursue?

I did have aspirations of being a painter. It is a great love of mine, but at the moment I just have no time to pursue it, but I hope eventually it is something that I can return to. But I am juggling here as a single parent mother with a full time job - that's a lot to handle.

Can you comment on being a single parent?

Reilly is my first and foremost. I do have a great nanny. When I'm not working I'm with my daughter. During the day she comes here to the trailer and spends the afternoon with me. So even though I put in long days on the set, I get to see her. Though my work hours are long, I am not working every minute of the day because there is lighting and rearranging, so I have quite a bit of downtime during my day, which allows me to be with my little girl. But on the topic of single parenting, I just wrote a children's book called Love is a Family. It embraces the non-traditional family and reminds children that family is not simply 'mom-dad-brother-sister,' but a family is love, and if you have been raised in love, then that is every bit a family as the next one.

The book fills a void out there. Today there is a growing percentage of families that are headed by only one parent. That is a huge amount of people. I think that for a child like my own to be able to read a little book where the heroine was being raised by a single parent, she can identify with that. But I also hope for kids who being raised by mom and dad, that this book will help them remain open-minded. As we know, kids can be so cruel, and perhaps this book may help them be more understanding of that child in their class who has only one parent.

Do you have any other plans to write another children's book?

Yes, I'd like to. I have a good relationship with Reagan Books, the publicist. It's something I am able to do here on my laptop during my workday. So, maybe down the road I'll have another go at it.

Finally, what are your holiday plans?

Togetherness with my family and friends. Every December in my daughter's name I throw a lovely children's party for the children of the Touched by an Angel crew. It's hundreds of kids. We have all kinds of fun characters that come and a magician. That will be really fun.

How to Start a Book Club - 10 Easy Steps

So you want to start your own book club? Terrific! Book discussion groups are great ways to make new friends, keep in touch with old ones, discover new books, and have meaty conversations. To help you get organized, simply follow these 10 steps and you'll be on your way!

  1. Decide what kind of a club you want to be-do you want to be seriously academic with a heavy emphasis on book discussion and minimal social chat? Or do you enjoy the social bonding aspect of a book club-food, wine, personal sharing-and want to keep discussions shorter, light and fun? Probably, it's somewhere in between the two.
  2. Decide what kind of books you want to read-do you enjoy reading the older classics or contemporary novels? Challenging works or somewhat lighter? Perhaps poetry, plays, or nonfiction-history, biographies, travel stories, current events. What about specific genres-detective/mystery, romance, inspirational, science fiction or fantasy? Perhaps you're eclectic-you like a variety of genres.
  3. Choose three friends who share similar reading tastes and ways of approaching book discussions-that's important. You all want to be on the same page, so to speak. Each one of the three should ask one or two others, for a total of 7-10 members. It doesn't matter if you don't all know each other; in fact, it's more fun if you don't. And start small-you can always add new members when you want, though it's good to stop at 16, a maximum number for most book clubs.
  4. Choose when and where to meet. Once you all get together, pick a day and time of the month that works with everyone's schedule. Some clubs meet in the evenings, after work; others on weekends. Those who are at home with children, or retired, find midmornings or lunchtime best. The most important thing is to establish a schedule and try to stick to it.Then, of course, decide where you want to meet. Most clubs meet in each others' homes or restaurants. Others find rooms in local libraries, Y's, or other more public places. Or you may decide to become a library-sponsored group, in which case you will always have a good source of fresh new members.
  5. Decide about food. There will be food, right? Of course. Do you want just appetizers or desserts...or do you want full meals? And who prepares the food-does every member bring a dish...or does each member cook once a during the year? Maybe it's brown bag lunch or a potluck supper. Think, too, about having themed food to match your book-feature food from Afghanistan when you read A Thousand Splendid Suns. Look for Book Club Recipes on the web to give you ideas.
  6. Decide how to select your books. Most clubs use one of two basic methods-voting or rotation. The voting begins with members making book suggestions, followed by discussion, and then a vote. The process can be as formal or informal as you want. The rotation system means that every member gets a month to choose a book. Both methods have their strong suits...and their drawbacks. Choose two or three books at a time so members can read at their own pace. Many clubs choose all their books for the year at one meeting, but that ties clubs into a rigid schedule...and it's unfair to members who had to miss the one meeting.
  7. Give yourselves a name. And be creative: some of my favorites are The Happy Bookers...or First, the Food Book Club...or The Brooksville Book Babes.
  8. Send out monthly reminders for every meeting. Don't rely on peoples' memories. Use email, phone or postcards, so make sure you keep an up-to-date contact list.
  9. Keep a journal. It's a nice way to keep track of all the books you've read and what you thought of them. You might include photo highlights of special meetings or trips to hear an author speaker.
  10. Give back to the community. Collect dues and donate books to your local library, or sponsor a scholarship for youngster in a literacy program. Schedule reading times for nursing homes patients.
Starting book clubs takes some initial work up front to get them off the ground. But once up and running, you'll be surprised at how they take on a life of their own. Good luck...and happy reading!

White Balancing and Color Temperature For Video Production

Two things a bit on the technical side when it comes to making video are color temperature and white balancing. They are related. This post tells you everything you need to know from a practical level about these terms and how they affect the way you shoot video.

White balancing is an adjustment you make to the camera that tells it what kind of light you are recording in so that the camera records video the correct color.

(Small, automatic cameras always have automatic white balancing so you do not need to worry about it, but larger video cameras have manual white balance control which gives you better quality. )

WHY DO YOU NEED TO WHITE BALANCE?

Different types of light are different colors. The camera needs to adjust itself in order to shoot proper color. This might seem strange, because light generally looks white to us humans, regardless of its source. We do not see sunlight as blue, florescent light as green, or incandescent as orange, but they are.

Cameras see the light as it is truly colored but our brains and eyes sort them all out as white or else we'd feel like we were on a permanent LSD trip. (Wow man, everything is soooo colorful.)

Color temperature is the technical term for measuring the color of light. The Kelvin Temperature scale is used. Standard sunlight is about 5,400 degrees Kelvin. Shadowy sunlight is "colder," about 7,400 degrees. Tungsten halogen TV lights are orange and come in at 3200 degrees kelvin.

You do not really have to know these exact values to adjust your camera. Most cameras white balance by pointing them at a white card that is reflecting the light being shot under. Then a button is pushed and the camera reads the white and adjusts all other colors relative to it.

One advanced tip is to white balance on a card with a slight blue tint and you will get a nice warm orange. Not orange enough to look distorted, just orange enough to look inviting.

You can do the reverse by balancing on a slightly orange card. This gives you a blue tint, which might just be what you need to make that Christmas scene shot in July look cold.

To play it safe and get the truest color, it is best to shoot in one type of light. Mixtures can throw a camera off. For example, if you shoot inside under incandescent light your windows will look overly blue. Sometimes that can actually look nice, but often it looks horrible.

If you go outside to shoot without changing your white balance setting from taping indoors, your video is likely to be very blue.

If your camera has a manual white balance, use it every single time you change light. Also change it as the day lingers, because sunlight in the evening is much bluer than sunlight at noon.

One great feature to look for in more advanced video cameras is the ability to set white balance presets. They can help you change your white balance quickly, without having to go through the typical routine with the white card.

I hope this information helps you make better videos!
